  • Salmon sector voluntarily withdraws EPS Licence applications
February 20th 2021

The Scottish salmon sector launched a review of the use of acoustic deterrent devices (ADDs) last year. This has lead to a sector-wide voluntary withdrawal of EPS licence applications due to the continued lack of clarification from the Scottish Government and Marine Scotland regarding ADD use by fish farmers.

It is critical however that, like any farmer, salmon farmers have a suite of deterrents available to offer protection against predation, particularly as they have a statutory duty to care for the welfare of their fish.

This move shows that the Scottish salmon farming sector is serious about its long-term sustainability. It also reinforces the sector's call for robust and intelligent regulation with minimal bureaucracy, to enable it to operate and grow in the most responsible way.
