Question One: What inspired you to pursue a career in salmon farming, and what keeps you passionate about the industry?
Leah: I was inspired to pursue a career in salmon farming because I enjoy working outdoors and being part of an industry that produces sustainable, high-quality food. Working on a fish farm has shown me how much care, science and teamwork goes into raising healthy stock. Seeing the full process from smolt to harvest made me appreciate the responsibility involved and motivated me to develop my knowledge further.
Question Two: What does a typical day look like in your role?
Leah: On a typical day most of my day it would involve working on the fish farm pens with tasks including ; Feeding operations (monitoring feed systems or operating feeding equipment), Fish health checks observing fish behaviour and reporting any concerns, Checking the water quality for plankton and jellyfish.
Question Three: What has helped you feel confident in your role?
Leah: Working as a Marine Operative at Bakkafrost has helped me grow in confidence through hands-on experience and responsibility. Gaining practical skills in feeding operations, fish health monitoring, equipment maintenance, and site safety has made me feel capable and trusted within my team. Being relied upon to complete tasks efficiently and safely, even in challenging weather conditions, has strengthened my self-belief. Support and guidance from experienced colleagues have also helped me develop new skills and improve my knowledge of aquaculture.
Question Four: What advice would you give to other women considering a career in salmon farming?
Leah: My advice to other women considering a career in salmon farming, would be to go for it and not let stereotypes hold you back. The industry can be physically demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding and full of opportunities to learn and progress. Confidence grows with experience, and being part of a supportive team makes a big difference. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take on new challenges, and prove what you’re capable of. Salmon farming needs skilled, dedicated people, good team players and hardworking. If you’re interested in working outdoors, caring about animal welfare, and building a practical career, it’s definitely worth pursuing.
