Food security is really about something simple. It means making sure people have reliable access to safe, nutritious food, now and in the future. At a time when global supply chains can no longer be taken for granted, producing more of our food here in the UK matters. Scottish salmon has an important role to play in that.

Finley Forwood is part of the next generation shaping Scotland’s aquaculture sector. An Aqua Technician with Scottish Sea Farms in Shetland, he combines hands-on hatchery experience with a Modern Apprenticeship through UHI Shetland.

Salmon Scotland chief executive Tavish Scott has urged MSPs to carry out a full investigation next session into how the species is managed and the environmental pressures it faces. The call follows evidence given to the Scottish Parliament’s rural affairs and islands committee by Fisheries Management Scotland chief executive Dr Alan Wells, who said he would welcome an inquiry into wild salmon management.

Today is International Women’s Day, and we’re celebrating the women working across Scotland’s salmon farming sector and the vital role they play in aquaculture. As part of this, we met up with Leah MacIntyre, a Marine Operative at Bakkafrost Scotland, to hear more about her experience.
