Scotland's new seafood strategy highlights strength of Scottish salmon sector

A new national strategy for seafood highlights the immense economic contribution of farm-raised salmon to the blue economy.

The Scottish Government has published a vision which recognises that Scottish seafood is renowned at home and internationally for its quality and sustainability and is "enabled by an innovative and productive sector".

It highlights that farm-raised salmon is the UK's top food export, and the sector has a target of achieving net zero emissions by 2045 as part of its world-leading sustainability charter.

Scottish salmon adds £760million-a-year to the country's economy, a study by Salmon Scotland has found, with export sales increasing to £614million in 2021.

Salmon farming directly employs more than 2,500 people in fragile, coastal communities in rural Scotland, with a further 10,000 Scottish jobs dependent on the sector.

Tavish Scott, chief executive of Salmon Scotland, said:

"This strategy recognises the important role the Scottish salmon sector plays as part of Scotland's world-class seafood offering.

"A growing global population needs healthy, nutritious food, and Scotland can help feed the world by growing responsibly.

"The UN has pointed out that seafood and sustainable aquaculture is the way forward, and there is a real opportunity through the growth of the Scottish salmon sector."
