Scottish salmon is the UK's top food export, with sales worth £844 million in 2024 – a new record!

France, the USA and China were the top three markets of a total of 48 countries which imported Scottish salmon in 2024, according to official figures published by the UK government on 13 February 2025.

Our near neighbour, France, continues to be the largest market for Scottish salmon with sales worth £462 million and accounts for 62 per cent of all Scottish salmon exports, followed by USA (£225 million), and China (£76 million) as demand for healthy, nutritious Scottish salmon continues to climb around the world.

Exports to European Union countries accounted for 58 per cent of the volume of global Scottish salmon exports. 25 per cent of all Scottish salmon exports headed across the Atlantic to the United States, our second biggest market.

The biggest growth in exports in 2024 was recorded in Asia and Oceania region, with a 62 per cent increase in export value 2024.

In total, more than 101,000 tonnes of fresh Scottish salmon was exported in 2024.

Scottish salmon is the UK's biggest food export, outperforming bakery goods, chocolate, cheese, cereals and lamb.

Updated protected geographic indication (PGI) status means that only farm-raised salmon from Scotland can be called “Scottish salmon” providing legal protection on the provenance and quality of our product.

As well as helping to put Scotland on the map, globally renowned Scottish salmon helps to maintain jobs and generate wealth for people living it our coastal communities.
